FAQs

Mardi Himal Trek - 7 Days frequently asked questions

You'll find the Mardi Himal hiking path in the Annapurna region, east of Annapurna Base Camp and beneath stunning Machhapuchhre. The Mardi Himal hike takes you to the mountain's base camp. You'll get the best views of Mt. Machhapuchre (Mt. Fishtail) and Annapurna South along the route.

The scenery from the trail mainly consists of Mt. Machhapuchre/Fishtail (6993m), Annapurna South (7219m), Mardi Himal (5587m), and Hiunchuli (6441m). If the weather is clear and you're lucky, you may as well see other mountains like Baraha Shikhar (Mt. Fang) (7647m), Tent Peak (5695m), Singhachuli (6501m), and many more.

There isn't a better trek than the Mardi Himal trail if you've never done high-altitude trekking before. No previous trekking experience is necessary because the trails are well-paved for your convenience. However, the path can occasionally be difficult, so it's best to be physically and emotionally healthy before starting the hike. You can engage in some straightforward cardio exercises, such as running, jogging, swimming, etc., to prepare for the trek.

Mardi Trekking is best done in the spring (from March to May) and fall (from September to November). Particularly at this time of year, the sky is clear, and the weather is generally steady in the Nepalese Himalayas. A pleasant trip is made possible by the warm, sunny days of Spring and Autumn, which have little to no snow and rain.

Due to the brief duration of the Mardi Himal Trip, you won't be spending a lot of time at a high altitude, protecting you from the severe effects of Altitude Sickness. Additionally, the highest height you'd be traveling to, 4500 meters, is not too high to cause severe AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). However, getting enough sleep, consuming a healthy diet, and frequently hydrating your body with water are the best ways to care for your body. Alcohol dehydrates your body, so stay away from it while hiking up.

You can charge your phone and camera batteries for free at the mountain lodge where you stay the night or in the tea places along the hike for a small fee. Here, solar energy is used as a source of electricity. There might not be enough electricity for everyone when it's cloudy, so be mindful of how much power you use. Keeping the batteries close to your body is the best way to save the battery as it drains quickly in cold weather.

Even though it's a brief hike, we strongly advise purchasing travel insurance from a reputable provider for your own security. In the Himalayas, you can never predict when the weather will turn bad or when your health will be at risk. Therefore, regardless of the trek's length, all Outfitter Nepal trips must be covered by travel insurance that includes coverage for the use of an air ambulance, lost property, legal obligations, helicopter rescues or emergency evacuations, and medical problems in the case of unfavorable circumstances.

Yes, you can surely buy trekking gear in Nepal. The streets of Thamel, Kathmandu are full of such trekking equipment stores, where you can get a good deal due to the competitive market. It's so much cheaper than in your home country; you might be surprised.

Yes, although the package covers basic accommodation and meals, you need some cash for your personal expenses. Make sure to carry some Nepalese rupees during the trek. As ATMs aren't available on the trail, you must carry cash from Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty Explained

One of the questions that you, as a trekker or traveler headed for a Himalayan adventure, might have is the level of difficulty of the trek/expedition. The Mardi Himal Trek, being moderately strenuous, is an ideal opportunity for trekkers who haven't trekked at high altitude or are limited on time. While you won't need any technical climbing skills, it's essential to have a reasonable level of physical fitness, stamina, and endurance, as this will make your experience far more enjoyable.

On the other hand, participants must not underestimate the trek. Several factors might make the trek difficult if you are not prepared. This includes the significant elevation gain throughout the trek, which can have severe effects on your body if you do not rest and acclimatize properly. Similarly, the unpredictable weather conditions will require travelers to be prepared for any changes, including sudden rain, snow, and windstorms, with the right gear, clothing, and equipment.

Additionally, expect to walk around 5 to 7 hours daily on varied terrains from lush forests to rocky paths as you ascend. This will cause your muscles to tire and require more energy from your body. To truly embrace the journey, we suggest incorporating light physical preparation in the months leading up to your trip. By doing so, you will not only guarantee your safety but also an immersive travel experience in the Himalayas.

How to Prepare for the Mardi Himal Trek?

A considerate and planned approach helps to (successfully) accomplish the Mardi Himal Trek. Travelers with a reasonable level of fitness can still make this trek, but it is recommended to start training physically at least 3 months before departure. Since the trek involves hiking on steep terrains, especially from Low Camp to High Camp, it is recommended to include brisk walking, jogging, or cycling for 30–45 minutes, 4–5 times a week in your workout plan.

The cardio workout will significantly enhance your lung capacity and enable you to adapt to the conditions of high-altitude regions. Additionally, working on your core strength and leg strength will help you enjoy many hours of hiking with your daypack. Consider doing exercises like step-ups, skipping ropes, squats, and weights. Likewise, core stability and some light yoga were also beneficial for balance, flexibility, and back strain.

Moreover, trekkers should focus on hydration and adequate sleep to ensure their bodies recover well. A well-prepared individual with gradual and consistent training is less likely to be overwhelmed by fatigue and physical stress.

Altitude Sickness During and its Remedies

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), also known as altitude sickness, is a concern on the Mardi Himal trek. Trekkers are at risk, particularly when ascending from Forest Camp (2,600 m) to Mardi Himal Base Camp viewpoint (4,250 m), where oxygen levels drop significantly. Some of the early signs of the illness include headache, nausea, loss of appetite, disturbed sleep, or dizziness. To proactively manage this, it is crucial to emphasize a "go slow" approach and avoid rapid elevation gains. Our expert guides who have experienced such situations suggest the following practical methods to mitigate and alleviate the symptoms of altitude sickness.

  • Drink 3–4 liters of water daily, and avoid alcohol or sleeping pills that can worsen oxygen absorption.
  • Taking short acclimatization breaks during steep climbs helps the body to rest and avoid overexertion.
  • Take Diamox (acetazolamide) as a preventive or early remedy, under medical advice.
  • Drink natural remedies like lemon tea, garlic soup, and ginger tea to soothe your body.
  • Get at least 8 hours of sleep, allowing your body to acclimatize and recover.
  • Maintaining a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates and proteins.
  • Listen to your body and communicate any discomfort promptly to our guides, who will provide you with immediate medical attention.
  • Should symptoms persist or worsen, the most critical remedy is immediate descent to a lower elevation.

Note: We can also arrange an immediate helicopter evacuation covered by your travel insurance in the event of altitude sickness or any other medical emergencies.

Best Time to Trek Mardi Himal: A Seasonal Breakdown

It is essential to choose an ideal time for the Mardi Himal Trek to ensure the best experience possible. Spring (March, April, May) and autumn (September, October, November) are the peak seasons and the best windows to trek, as they provide the best trekking conditions.

During spring, travelers will experience stable weather, extended daylight, and rhododendron forests in full bloom, with typical daytime temps around 5–10 °C at High Camp (3,580 m). The trails are dry and free from snow, and visibility is generally excellent for views of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna.

Similarly, the autumn season follows the monsoon rain, which clears the atmosphere of dust and debris, offering clear panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and mountain peaks. Although you might experience light rain and snow, the weather during this period is typically stable, with moderate temperatures ranging from 8-10 °C at higher elevations..

I met superhumans in Nepal. Not one but two and all in one shiny morning. It was 8.30 am local time when I reached the viewing point of Mardi Himal, 4200m above sea level. I missed the opportunity to see the sunrise from the viewing point by two hours. Nevertheless....
