About Khopra Danda Ridge Trek

Khopra Ridge Trekking is a community lodge-based trekking that traverses the lower part of the Annapurna region. This trek is a newly designed trekking trail made to boost the economy of the region and best alternative of Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Khopra Ridge Trek is one of the best treks in Nepal in terms of both adventure and ease. The trek is designed to present you all the classic views like picturesque villages, terraced fields, lush green hills, wildlife, various floras, and stunning views of the Himalayan mountains. Being a newly opened trek, Khopra Ridge Trekking is relatively less crowded hiking trail. The trail is said to be natural heaven.

Kopra Ridge Trek trail is located away from the busier trails of Annapurna region. As it is a community lodge trek, you spend the night in the lodge that is run by the locals. This trek not only offers heavenly views and once in a lifetime experience, but also let you contribute to increasing the economy of the region. During your stay in villages, you get to see the lifestyle and the culture of the locals.

The trail further leads to the beautiful Ghorepani village surrounded by lovely rhododendron forests and mountains. It is one of the most popular villages in the Annapurna region. Next morning, you hike up to Poon Hill viewpoint as well to observe glorious sunrise along with the Himalayas.

Scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara to Nayapul

From Kathmandu, you drive to Pokhara and further to Nayapul. The drive will be long and scenic. You get to see lush green hills, rivers, small settlements, dense forests, and waterfalls during the drive. The route Nayapul is short and requires around an hour-long drive.

Explore the land of Gurkhas, Ghandruk

Ghandruk is the main village, where the world-famous Gurkhas are chosen. People from the Gurung community resides here, therefore you get to see the lifestyle, culture, and tradition of Gurungs.

Get to see gorgeous sunrise/sunset from Khopra Ridge

As you will reach Khopra Ridge, you get to see an outstanding landscape view. In the evening, you see gorgeous sunset and next morning phenomenal sunrise along with numerous hills and mountains.

Spend the night in beautiful Ghorepani village

Ghorepani is one of the most beautiful and famous villages in the Lower Annapurna region. The village is surrounded by lively rhododendron forests and mountains. You get to see excellent views of the Himalayan mountains from this village.

Things you should know before going on Khopra Danda Trek

Khopra Ridge Trek itinerary

Khopra Danda Trekking starts with a day drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. You then take a short drive to Nayapul and start the trek by following the trial of Ghandruk-Ghorepani to Tadapani. Further, following a remote trail to Khopra ridge for the next 5 days staying at the community lodges, you reach at Kopra lodge at 3,660 meters. It is the highest point of the trek, which is above the Poon Hill. You return to Ghorepani via Swanta village. Continue along the original trail of the Ghorepani trek to return to Pokhara.

Khopra Ridge Trek difficulty

Khopra Ridge Trek is an easy to moderate trek that presents the perfect balance of adventure and smooth trekking experience. This trek is an ideal option for anyone including the beginner trekkers. Previous trekking experience is not needed, but have to be in good health. You have to walk for around 5 to 6 hours on a daily basis, therefore good stamina is required.

Best time to go on Khopra Ridge Trek

Spring (March to May) and Autumn (October to November) is the best time of the year to go on Khopra Ridge Trek. The moderate climate and stable weather make the journey joyful. Moreover, hundreds of flora bloom in the entire region making the trail extremely beautiful

Food & Accommodation during Khopra Ridge Trek

Khopra Ridge Trek is a community lodge based trek. This means you will stay in a lodge with homely vibes. The rooms will be basic yet clean. Meals will be served as per the menu of the lodge. Dal bhat tarkari is the most common and staple food here like any other place in Nepal. You can also get meat items, curries, eggs, bread, tea, coffee, momo, etc.

Day 1: Arrive at Kathmandu airport and transfer to hotel

Arrive at the Tribhuvan International Airport, where one of our airport representatives will welcome you. He takes you to the hotel. Rest for the day and stroll on the colorful streets of Thamel in the evening.

Today is a relaxing day in Kathmandu. You go on a guided sightseeing tour of monuments like Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhnath Stupa, Swayambhunath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square. Our professional tour guide will brief you about the sites and their importance during the tour. Later, in the evening, you prepare for the trek. Check your gears and make sure everything is on the place.

Driving along the scenic Trisuli and Marsyangdi River, you will reach Pokhara. Pokhara is a tourist's paradise full of natural as well as cultural heritage sites such as lakes, caves, & temples of Buddhist and Hindus along with her lovely mountains. In the evening, you can explore the Lakeside market and do boating on tranquil Fewa Lake.

From Pokhara, you take a short drive to Nayapul, the starting point of the trek. From here, the trail leads to Ghandruk village. It is a very famous and beautiful village. Moreover, this village of the major recruitment center for the famous Gurkha soldiers. Ghandruk is also the hub of the Annapurna Conservation Area Project, which promotes many varied ecological projects

Leaving Ghandruk behind, you begin trekking enjoying stunning views of Annapurna South, Mt. Machhapuchhre, and Mt. Hiunchuli. The trail leads to Tadapani through a lush forest.

Leaving the main trail of the Annapurna, you begin trekking into beautiful rhododendron & oak forests on the upwards route. A small descent and the trail climbs to the shoulder of a hill through lush forests of rhododendron. On the way, you also pass by abandoned shacks before arriving on a bigger ridge top clearing at Dobato and Bayeli Kharka. You get to see a wonderful view of Mt. Dhaulagiri from here this place.

The trail descends through beautiful forests and reaches the pasture of Lower Chistibung. You then ascend gradually through forests and reach Upper Chistibung. If you’re lucky you might even spot the colorful Lophophorus (Danphe), the national bird of Nepal, as well as Himalayan Thar on the grassy ridge high above the trail.

Today, you slowly move towards Khopra ridge above the tree line through alpine meadows and pastures. As you approach Khopra ridge, you will see the top of Annapurna South. Further, you move towards the Khopra top from where you get to see breath-taking views of the Kali Gandaki river along with Mt. Nilgiri, Mt. Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna South.

It is a day of rest day. You go on short excursions to Khayre Lake (4,500 m). From this lake, you get to witness a surreal view of Mt. Fang and other surrounding mountains. Khayre Lake is a holy lake of Hindus. You can see several shrines near the lake. For those who do not want to walk to the lake, a half-day walk from Khopra can also be arranged.

Today, you move towards Swanta village. The trail descends off the hillside and continues downhill on a steep trail. Enjoying the superb view of Mt. Dhaulagiri and terraced fields, you reach Swanta village.

The trail further drops down to Chitre and takes you to Ghorepani village, a very beautiful village. Ghorepani is a popular spot for trekkers to see beautiful distance views of Annapurnas and Dhauligiri. The village is surrounded by beautiful rhododendron forests and mountains.

Wake up early in the morning and hike up to Poon Hill to catch a glorious sunrise view along with the western Himalayas. After that, come back to Ghorepani and have breakfast. Later, you descend through a forest of rhododendron and oak to Banthanti. From here, the trail further descends to Ulleri and then to Tikhedhunga. A short walk of 15 minutes from Tikhedhunga and you will reach Hille.

It is the last day of the trek. Crossing Modi Khila on a suspension bridge, you walk for a while and reach Nayapul. From here, you hop on the bus/van and drive to Pokhara.

Following the same route as before, you drive back to Kathmandu. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you move to the hotel and rest. In the evening, you can stroll on the colorful streets of Thamel and end your day with a delicious dinner.
