12 Days Everest Base Camp Trek - Complete Overview

The Everest Base Camp Trek 12 Days is a journey through the iconic trails through the heart of the Khumbu region in Nepal to the foot of Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. The classic 12-day begins with a scenic 35-minute flight into the Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla. From here, you will follow the historic footsteps of mountaineers like Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay through Phakding to Namche Bazaar, where you will spend an acclimatization day.

As you ascend through the Khumbu valley, the trail passes through the Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is known for its unique biodiversity and landscape. Moving on, the trek leads us to sacred sites like Tenboche monastery, where you will come across monuments of deep spiritual and religious significance. Here, the walls are adorned with intricate carvings and art, which reflect the cultural heritage of the region.

The final push takes you to Lobuche, Gorak Shep, and finally to Everest Base Camp, where the towering ice walls of the Khumbu Glacier will welcome you. The next morning, we hike our way to Kala Pathar, where a glorious sunrise awaits with rewarding views of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse. The descent back follows the same route, but with a quicker pace, letting you enjoy the journey with new perspectives.

The 12-Day Everest Base Camp Trek is a perfect balance between efficient timing, proper acclimatization, and a rewarding experience without feeling rushed. It is moderately complex and can be completed by travelers who are physically fit and in good health. Additionally, our itinerary is carefully designed with strategic rest points for proper acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the increasing altitude.

We have specialized and led a successful trek to the Everest Base Camp for over a decade, and planned the route map based on the years of experience of our expert guide. They have hiked on the trail over a dozen times and are knowledgeable about the region's landscape, culture, and history. Outfitter Nepal is dedicated to sharing the majestic beauty of the Himalayas with utmost respect. The journey to EBC is a profound personal achievement, and our mission is to ensure every step is taken with deep appreciation of culture, lasting connection, and unparalleled safety

We are a trekking company that stands dedicated to sharing the incredible beauty and majesty of the Himalayas with the highest respect for the land and its people. Our company has over 15 years of professional history guiding people through the Khumbu, and our history is steeped in the very trails we walk. We believe that the trek to Everest Base Camp is a profoundly personal achievement, and it is our mission to ensure every moment is done with an unsurpassed commitment to safety, a greater respect for the culture and people of the land, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of the natural world.

Note: We suggest planning your arrival in Kathmandu two to three days before your trek begins. This gives you a little extra time to take care of any last-minute preparations, meet your team, and settle in before the adventure starts.

Online Trip Briefing: Once your booking is confirmed, we’ll schedule an online trip briefing to walk you through everything you need to know before setting out. During this session, we’ll go over the gear checklist, share the day-to-day itinerary, and give you a clear picture of what to expect on the trail. After you send us your essential documents, we’ll email you the available dates and times so you can join the briefing at your convenience.

Lukla Flight Information: The flights between Kathmandu and Lukla are highly dependent on weather conditions and air traffic. We strongly recommend you add at least two extra days to your trip to avoid any stress about missing your international flight home.

It’s also important to know that during peak trekking months, from March to May and again from October to November, flights to Lukla often depart from Ramechhap (Manthali) instead of Kathmandu's busier airport.

If this is the case, your adventure will begin with a scenic five-hour drive from Kathmandu, departing at 1AM. to catch your flight from Ramechhap. Outside of these busy seasons, flights to Lukla typically operate directly from Kathmandu.

A Typical Day on the Everest Base Camp Trek 12 Days

The scenery and the landscape change dramatically with each passing day, but the daily routine during the trek remains the same. The day begins early with a gentle knock on your room at the teahouse from our guide. After freshening up, you will head to the dining hall, where the air is filled with the delicious smell of hot breakfast. You will meet up with the trek members, who are fueling themselves with traditional Sherpa bread, porridge, and oatmeal, and sipping hot beverages.

After enjoying a hearty breakfast, you will pack your daypack and hit the trail. The hike begins early in the morning with a mix of ascents and descents. The trail never gets boring as you will be crossing dramatic suspension bridges, hiking through rhododendron forests, and ancient stone walls carved with Buddhist mantras. Around midday, our guide will select a teahouse or lodge for lunch break. You can relax and replenish yourself before proceeding further along the trail.

The afternoon can be intense, so hats and sunglasses are essential to protect you. Your body will be affected by the constant physical exertion, with each step requiring conscious effort. Additionally, altitude sickness is a very real possibility above 3,000m, so your guide will encourage a gradual pace, steady hydration, and plenty of rest stops. To prepare for this journey, we recommend building fitness beforehand with regular hikes, cardio, and strength training, as endurance and stamina are more important than speed.

While the trek is considered moderate to challenging, with daily hikes lasting 5–7 hours over rugged terrain, determination and preparation make it achievable for anyone with good physical fitness. We recommend that you take it slow and walk at a gradual pace with frequent breaks along the way. As the evening approaches, you will arrive at a village mentioned in the itinerary. The rest of the evening is spent relaxing by the communal dining hall, where trekkers socialize, play games, and enjoy a warm meal.

Note: The difficulties you will be facing are primarily physical exhaustion as you will be walking around 6 to 8 hours covering a distance of 8 to 12km, depending on the itinerary. Additionally, hiking on the rugged terrain makes the trek mentally challenging, but the sense of accomplishment is immeasurable.

Tip: The day's highlights are plentiful throughout the trek, from the view of magnificent peaks like Ama Dablam and Lhotse to immersion in Sherpa Culture and a visit to local monasteries. The journey is a profound experience. It is recommended to travel during the spring (March, April, May) and autumn (September, October, November) seasons for optimal weather conditions.
