After being shut for three years, China has finally decided to re-open its door to foreign tourists. On January 8, 2023, mainland China lifted the border restrictions imposed during the COVID outbreak in early 2020. Since then, mainland China has been swamped by visitors. However, tourists waiting to travel to Tibet will still have to wait another month until the Tibet travel permit resumes in April.

Yes, Tibet is preparing to re-open its border and issue travel permits for all foreign tourists from the beginning of April. Such good news for everyone who’s been desperately waiting to travel to Tibet! Even if the thought of traveling to Tibet has never crossed your mind, this is a sign to plan a trip to Tibet in 2023. Can Tibet travel permits be issued from Nepal?

Yes. In fact, you don’t even require a Chinese visa if you’re traveling to Tibet from Nepal. You will be issued a Chinese Group Visa from the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, for which you have to book your travels through a certified tour operator in Tibet. It usually takes 3 business days to receive the Chinese Group Visa.

The corresponding travel agency in Nepal takes care of the visa application process on your behalf, so you just have a submit the following documents to your travel agent.

  • Application form
  • Passport with a minimum validity of six months
  • Passport copies of previous Chinese visas (if you have any)
  • Passport-sized photos
  • Visa application fees, depending on the nationality and period of stay
