Yes, one need to have permits to trek to Everest Base Camp and basically, there are two permits you require for the Everest Base camp, one is Trekkers Information management System and another one is Sagarmatha National park entry permits.

Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS Card):

The Trekkers Information management system TIMS card is necessary for any trek in Nepal including Everest Base camp Trek and if you are planning to trek individually without joining taking trekking company’s services without taking any guide and porter then it cost 2000.00 NRS per person and this can be taken from Trekking agencies association of Nepal (TAAN) or from Nepal tourism Board (NTB).

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit:

One required to have entry permits to enter Sagarmatha National park and the Everest Base Camp Trek is located in Sagarmatha National park and the permits can be taken from the entrance point of the National park at Jorsale or National park office in Bhrikuti Mandap, Kathmandu.
