A new Work Procedure for Search, Rescue, Medical Treatment and Monitoring of Tourists, 2018 has been enforced in Nepal

The Government of Nepal, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation has implemented new work procedure on Search, Rescue, Medical Treatment and Monitoring of Tourists, 2018.

The main goal of new work procedure is to systemize the search and rescue of tourists in case of natural disasters, sickness or any accident while they are on adventure tourism in Nepal; furthermore it aims to lessen the impact of such disasters as far as possible and to make the prompt, easy and smooth rescue and treatment service whenever tourists are affected by any kind of disaster in course of trekking, river rafting, mountaineering and other adventure tourism activities in Nepal.

The New work procedure have given responsibility and authority to the agency  that the agency immediately has to carry out search and rescue if any tourist or their workers go missing due natural disasters or any other cause in course of adventure activities. It is also the responsibility of the agency and the guide concerned to take and bring back the tourist to their destinations in a safe manner, the concerned agency would be responsible to conduct or have related bodies conduct the search and rescue works, taking the help of experts, other organizations, agencies, airlines and helicopters companies.

Furthermore, If the agency itself cannot carry out the search and rescue operation, it should notify the Tourist Police and the Department of Tourism at the earliest along with the name, nationality, passport number and other details of the tourist caught up in disaster then they will carry out the search and rescue operation.

The new work procedure for search, rescue, medical treatment and Monitoring of Tourists, 2018 has also a provision which bans the agents of foreign insurance companies based in Nepal from being involved in any activities related to search, rescue and treatment of tourists caught up in disaster.

The new work procedure for search, rescue, medical treatment and Monitoring of Tourists, 2018 has provision that bans to arrange trekking, climbing or any other Adventure Tourism activities without having licence for the related tourism business from the authorities, furthermore, the work procedure make compulsory to send tourist for the mountain trekking and any other adventure tourism activities only with the with licence holder guide who are trained from authorized institutions.

The Work Procedure also has made compulsory that the entire tourist traveling Nepal those do the adventure trekking or other adventure tourism activities in Nepal must have travel insurance policy that covers search and rescue in emergency.

As per the New work procedure, the Department of Tourism of Nepal has circulated to all the trekking agencies and adventure tourism organizer to apply the new work procedure and organize the trekking and other adventure tourism in Nepal with only authorized and trained trekking guides.
